How do I find the right place to live?
There are many things to consider when looking for a good place to live. Be sure to consider all of these factors when making your choice:
Safety Look for a location that makes you feel safe. You may have to be patient to find just the right place for you, but make sure you feel comfortable being outside in your yard or waiting for a bus in your neighborhood.
Affordable You will need to find a place that you can afford. Be patient and look for a place you like and can afford to rent each month. Be sure to ask questions about extra costs, like utilities and cable TV. Also ask if you will be required to pay an extra month’s rent up-front as a security deposit so you can plan for all your housing expenses.
Transportation Think about what kinds of transportation you will use. If you drive your own car, you will have more flexibility on where you live. But if you want to use a bus system, be sure you look at home locations that are accessible to a bus line. Homes in the country may be beautiful and affordable, but be sure you have a good way to get to all the activities you need and enjoy.
Accessible to jobs, shopping and activities Be sure to consider the location of your new home in relation to the places you need to go each day. Especially if you do not drive yourself, it is important to be close to your job, healthcare, church and grocery stores so you don’t have to spend too much time each week traveling to where you need to be. It’s even nice to be close to many of the social activities you enjoy. It can be very difficult if you live far away from all the things you like to do.
Social Contacts—family and friends It is usually most convenient to live close to family and friends who support you. It is nice to know that someone is close by if you need assistance. You might want to look for housing in the same town or area as your family or friends.
